For a number of years during the Ramadan period, an illegal street market, also known as the Fieldgate Street Ramadan Bazaar, is held in a private carpark located through a road running between Fieldgate Street E1, alongside the rear of Tesco’s which can be exited into Plumbers Row. It is opposite the London Muslim Centre and East London Mosque.

There have been some reported incidents of disorder in that area during the periods that the illegal market stalls operate in previous years and complaints from local stakeholders about the behaviour of visitors to that area.

The council is exploring a number of ways of addressing this and one of these is the making of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) under the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

The conditions of the order would be targeted at preventing the market stalls operating in this area during the whole period of Ramadan each year. The aim of this would not be to interfere with the normal observances during Ramadan but to prevent any anti-social behaviour and disorder that will have an impact on worshippers and local residents.

The council would like to know the views of residents and those operating businesses in the affected area before making any final decision on a PSPO or any other measures.
