CLOSED: Walter Terrace - new council homes
Consultation has concluded
We are consulting on plans to build four new family-sized, energy efficient council homes in Walter Terrace ahead of a planning application later this year. The site is currently occupied by lock up garages.
The homes will have four bedrooms, the development will be car free and the design will include space for children to play. It is part of our commitment to deliver 2,000 new council homes across Tower Hamlets.
Why we need to build
There are more than 18,000 people on the housing register in Tower Hamlets with nearly 10,000 in acute housing need. Families with a need for a four bedroom home - which these new properties will be - can wait up to 13 years and in some cases even longer.
Nearly 2,000 households have been placed in temporary accommodation, waiting for a permanent home and according to the national homelessness charity, Shelter, 60 per cent of residents in Tower Hamlets struggle to meet their housing costs.
Our residents are facing a housing crisis and these new affordable council homes, part of 2,000 that will be delivered in total, will make a genuine difference.
About the development
The design has taken into account the surrounding context and density, and is proposing a sensitive development of four large family homes, each will be affordable and will have four bedrooms. Each of the homes will have its own defined doorstep.
The proposed houses are situated along a newly created mews. This mews will provide doorstep play to the wider community and create a quieter area away from the busy school pick up point along Walter Terrace. New planting will line the edge of the site providing much needed greenery to the existing landscape.
