Welcome
Welcome to this community consultation page about the future of the St George’s Leisure Centre site in Shadwell.
Consultation on the project is currently ongoing and this page includes all of the information presented at public consultation events since October last year including from the recent February 2024 event.
On this page, you can fill in a feedback form from the February 2024 event which is available below.
Project Overview
The council is investing in a new leisure centre and housing facility that will be built on the site of St George’s Leisure Centre in Shadwell, providing more and better-quality leisure facilities alongside new homes for residents.
Proposals for the new leisure centre include a 25m six lane pool, learner pool, fitness suite, and studios for group exercise such as yoga, HIIT, Zumba and Pilates. There will also be new changing facilities with better accessibility.
Both the leisure facilities and homes will be owned and managed by the council.
To deliver the new facilities and homes, the council has made the decision to redevelop the site of the current St George’s Leisure Centre and bring forward improvements for the wider area including St George’s Gardens.
Past events
27 February 2024
Residents were invited to attend a consultation event at St George in the East Church which provided detailed designs for the new leisure and wellbeing facility and homes as well as introducing the wider landscape improvement concepts and provided further opportunities for feedback.
12 December 2023
Residents were invited to attend a consultation event at Raine's House in Wapping which provided information about the concept designs for the new leisure and wellbeing facility, homes and wider landscape improvement opportunities.
18 October 2023
Residents were invited to an engagement event which provided information about early demolition of the site. Following resident feedback that early demolition without knowing what would replace the existing building was not favoured, a decision was made to not progress with early demolition.
The application to demolish the current building will be submitted with the planning application along with proposals for the redevelopment of the site so that it is clear what will replace the existing building.
15 July 2023
An information stall was held at St George’s Fun Day to learn more about the council’s investment in St George’s new leisure centre and housing facility.
