Welcome to the engagement page for the Queen Mary University Mile End Campus Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

Haworth Tompkins are working in partnership with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to develop a new masterplan for the Queen Mary University campus in Mile End. The masterplan will be adopted by the Council as a Supplementary Planning Document to inform the development of the campus and to ensure that proposals are aligned to the interests of the local community and stakeholders. It will also take into consideration the area surrounding the campus, including the campus’ relationship to the Mile End Hospital, the Regent's Canal and Mile End Park.

Early Engagement

As part of the early engagement strategy, a series of preliminary workshops and meetings were held with landowners, council officers and other interested parties. The purpose of the these were to set out the purpose, scope and programme of the project, and to understand the objectives and concerns of all stakeholders.

Consultation Draft

A consultation draft of the document has now been produced which we would like your views on. The document can be downloaded on this webpage.

Document Structure

There are three parts to the draft document:

Section 1: Context and Analysis

This section introduces the aims and purposes of SPD; and sets out the context with regards to the character of the Mile End neighbourhood; and the potential opportunities and constraints associated with the campus.

Section 2: Area-wide Priorities

This section sets out the masterplan objectives and vision, as well as area-wide priorities relating the community infrastructure; built heritage and townscape; building heights; accessibility and integration; campus places and spaces; biodiversity and ecology; wayfinding and interpretation; transport and access; and environment and sustainability.

Section 3: Site Design Guide

This section sets out the core development opportunities and the key design principles that should be considered in developing proposals for five individual sites.

Next Steps

The consultation period will run from 3 February to 17 March 2021. During this time, we will be hosting further meetings with stakeholders.

This includes an online ‘open invite’ meeting on Wednesday 24 February 2021 at 5.30-7.30pm to anyone who has an interest in the development of the Mile End Campus. Here, LBTH officers and Haworth Tompkins will be available to talk through the document and respond any key objectives, concerns or queries. This will be hosted on Microsoft teams, which can be accessed from the link below:
