Globe Town market square update:

The tree pit timbers have now been rectified.

Globe Town Market Landscape:

The High Streets team are working in partnership with Globe Town Assembly and have appointed Cordwainer Grow to deliver the landscape design and community delivery of the planting on the market square and the street planters on Roman Road.

Works delivered to date on the market square include:

  • 18 trees planted on the square (5 native mature + 13 semi-mature and fruit trees)
  • Planters
  • Seating
  • Lighting with integrated power supply – charges paid by Highways/Market Services
  • Festoon lighting
  • Decluttering and repaving
  • Multi-functional space for community events
  • SuDs (sustainable drainage systems)
  • Existing traders pitches retained
  • Green roof waste storage

Still to be delivered:

  • Bike hoops
  • Water tap

Community Mural:

The High Streets team partnered with Streets of Growth, and in May 2023 they worked with young people to deliver a painted mural at Windsor House on Usk street Shine Your Light - Community Mural on Usk Street, E2 (streetsofgrowth.org)

Business support:

We are inviting applications for free business training to develop existing or new income stream. On completion of the training programme, there will be an opportunity to apply for a business grant of up to £1000 with 50% match funding - this means you will need to contribute up to £500 depending on how much grant money you apply for. Bespoke one-to-one training will be delivered at your venue or online at a time and pace that suits you.

We aim to complete the application selection process during April 2023 and begin training soon thereafter.

Pedestrian Link update:

We are awaiting feedback from Network Rail on the design proposal.

Roman Road West Regeneration Programme Context

In July 2019 the Council’s cabinet approved £1.67m funding (£1.57m capital & £100,000 revenue) for the regeneration programme as part of its capital delivery programme including:

  • Opening-up a railway arch to create a new walking route for 15,000 staff and students to connect Queen Mary University of London campus with the town centre via Meath Gardens
  • Public realm with wayfinding & signage, planters on the high street and artwork to the sides of housing blocks
  • Relaunch the Market Square with seating, lighting, planting and equipment for the market traders
  • Changing solid metal shutters into open grills on shopfronts
  • Converting underused lock-ups into workspace

Cancelled: Greenwich and Docklands International Festival (GDIF) 9 and 10 September 2022

Tower Hamlets Council and GDIF have taken the decision to cancel performances of “Roll Play” by Simple Cypher at Globe Town Market Square and “Unfurl” by Air Giants at Bethnal Green Gardens (both on 9 and 10 September) following the announcement of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 08.09.2022.

We wish to express our condolences to the Royal Family and all of those personally affected by her passing and are sorry for any disappointment caused by these cancellations at this time of public mourning.
