Awaab's Law was introduced in July 2023 following the tragic passing of Awaab Ishak. With this law, landlords are becoming subject to new requirements meant to ensure that something like this never happens again. Therefore, London Borough of Tower Hamlets is reviewing and updating our policy on damp and mould to meet the expectations of the Government on us as a landlord.

The aim of this policy is to clearly set out how we manage damp and mould in our properties to keep residents safe. To best enable us to do that, we need to make sure that you know our responsibilities to you as a tenant and where you can go to if you need help.

Phase 1 of Awaab's Law will be coming into force in October. We therefore want to hear from residents on the following:

  • Do you know what to do if there is damp and mould in your home?
  • Do you know where to get help about damp and mould if you need it?
  • Where would you like to see information about damp and mould?
  • What would you like to see from us in terms of tackling damp and mould?
  • If damp and mould were to appear in your home, would this policy make you feel in any way at fault?
