<h2 data-pm-slice="1 1 []">Help shape the future of transport in Tower Hamlets!</h2>We are updating the Tower Hamlets Transport Strategy and we want to hear from you. Your views will help shape how we improve transport, road safety, and active travel in the borough for the coming years. Alongside the strategy, we are also consulting on two key supporting plans, the Walking and Cycling Plan and Road Safety Plan.Background Since the Transport Strategy was first published in 2019, travel patterns and infrastructure needs have changed significantly. We are now updating the strategy to ensure it reflects these changes while continuing to make Tower Hamlets a safer and more accessible place to walk, cycle, and travel.Our Transport Strategy Update sets out our vision for how transport can support the council&#39;s strategic objectives. It responds to emerging challenges such as population growth and climate change, as well as building on what we&rsquo;ve achieved since the strategy was written.<h2>Why are we updating the strategy?</h2>In order to make Tower Hamlets a great place to live, work and visit, our updated strategy will focus on the following:<ul><li>Encouraging Walking &amp; Cycling &ndash; Walking and cycling are at the heart of our vision for a healthier, more sustainable borough. Our Walking and Cycling Plan sets out a roadmap to transform Tower Hamlets into one of the most walkable and cycle-friendly areas in London. This plan tackles barriers to active travel, increases pedestrian and cyclist safety, and looks at introducing new and upgraded walking and cycling routes to encourage greener transport choices. </li><li data-pm-slice="1 1 []">Improving Road Safety &ndash; Our new Road Safety Plan aligns with London&rsquo;s Vision Zero programme, aiming to eliminate all road fatalities and serious injuries by 2041. This plan includes measures such as expanding 20mph speed limits, improving pedestrian crossings, and implementing data-driven safety interventions in high-risk areas. </li><li>Tackling Climate Change &amp; Improving Air Quality &ndash; We are committed to reaching Net Zero by 2045 by expanding electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, supporting cleaner transport options, and planting over 1,000 trees to create more sustainable streets. Our efforts also include implementing Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs) and introducing additional parklets to enhance public spaces. </li><li>Enhancing Public Transport &amp; Infrastructure &ndash; As our borough continues to grow, we must ensure that our transport system keeps pace. We are working closely with Transport for London (TfL) to improve public transport services, expand bus priority measures, and enhance accessibility. The phased opening of the Elizabeth Line has strengthened connectivity, linking Whitechapel with key destinations across London, and we aim to build on this momentum.</li></ul><h2>Engagement and consultation</h2>The consultation will run for four weeks from 01/04/2025. Whilst our consultation will be primarily online, physical copies and surveys will be available at the Tower Hamlets Town Hall Foyer.
