This initial stage of the consultation has concluded. 

Tower Hamlets adopted the Queen Mary University Mile End Campus SPD on 28 July 2021.

The masterplan for the Queen Mary University London campus in Mile End outlines the development opportunities for the campus and seeks to ensure proposals are in line with the interests of the local community and stakeholders.

The SPD also takes into consideration the important spatial context surrounding the campus, including the Mile End Hospital, the Regent's Canal and Mile End Park.

The Queen Mary University Mile End Campus SPD was prepared under Regulations 11 to 16 of the Town and Country Planning (Local Planning) (England) Regulations 2012. Early-stage feedback was incorporated into the draft that was presented for public consultation, which took place between November and December 2020. A summary of the comments received during the public consultations and the Council’s response to them are set out in the Consultation Statement also available on the Council’s website.



Queen Mary University SPD Background

Haworth Tompkins and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets worked together to develop a new masterplan for the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) campus in Mile End. This SPD aims to guide the growth ambitions of the university and to ensure that this growth is aligned to the interests of the local community. The SPD also takes into consideration the area surrounding the campus, including the campus’ relationship to the Mile End Hospital, Regents Canal and Mile End Park.

The masterplan has been adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), which provides material weight in planning decisions and provides a management process for the future development of the campus.
