What's happening around Prestons Road?

Have your say on our proposals for Prestons Road, which aim to reduce vehicle speeds, make the road safer and give more priority to sustainable transport while improving levels of cycling and walking.

Proposals have been developed to reduce vehicle speeds along Prestons Road, which will improve safety, create more space and priority for buses and cycles and improve the local streets for the community’s use by making them quieter and more pleasant.

Prestons Road provides an important vehicle link to the Isle of Dogs, as well as providing access to the Waste Transfer Station and the new Wood Wharf. However, there are many residential areas along its length which generate a high level of pedestrian movement to schools, shops, bus stops, DLR stations and local businesses. The design of the road needs to cater better for all road users.

We expect even more walking, cycling and vehicle movement along Prestons Road in the future due to the current Government advice to maintain social distancing, as well as the new Wood Wharf junction works and other nearby developments. With this in mind, we want to ensure that everyone travelling in the area can do so safely and that residents have a quieter and more pleasant environment to live in. Reducing vehicle speeds is key to achieving this.

In order to slow traffic down and make the area safer and more welcoming for pedestrians and cyclists, we are proposing the following measures shown on the plan below.

We want to hear your views on:
  • Proposed segregated cycle lanes in both directions along Prestons Road.
  • Proposed changes to crossing points and junctions to improve them for walking and cycling, including advanced stop lines, continuous pavements and a signalised pedestrian crossing.
  • Proposed relocation of the CCTV and removing the current camera island.
  • Proposed 24-hour bus lane northbound along Prestons Road.
  • Proposed rain gardens, 13 new trees, a green wall and planting on pedestrian islands.
  • More space for pedestrians through new kerb lines at side roads and parking build-outs
  • A number of new parking spaces have also been proposed in the area.

Narrowing the road and widening the pavement would provide more space, safety and priority for walking and cycling in the long term, and help meet our current Streetspace objectives around social distancing in the short term.

New trees and the planting of a rain garden would help with surface water drainage and create nicer public spaces and a more pleasant environment for the community.

The proposal would allow for full emergency vehicle access.
