The existing 26 single-storey garages is situated to the east of the O’Brien House residential block. The site is located on the south side of Roman Road behind a converted public house. The site has good access to public transport links such as Bethnal Green and Mile End Underground stations and bus routes along Roman Road. It is also near to public green spaces such as Meath Gardens, Mile End Park and the Regent’s Canal.

The proposal

The proposed scheme will provide 10 socially rented tenures with 20% of these allocated to a local lettings provision for people on the Council’s housing waiting list in the area. It is a small-scale site low rise three storey block, with front door access to each property at street entrance to both the ground floor flats and the upper floors for maisonettes as shown in the image below.

Shepheard Epstein Hunter have been appointed to design the initial proposals for this consultation. We are a London-based architecture practice with extensive experience of housing projects particularly on constrained sites such as this.
