SURVEY PERIOD NOW EXTENDED TO 10TH JUNE 2021

Millwall Outer Dock Slipway, at the western side of the Isle of Dogs, is one of the few remaining public open spaces on the Isle of Dogs with direct access to the River Thames, and a clear reminder of the area's industrial history. Once the largest entrance lock in London, it is now one of the few remaining Thames slipways, and remains an important river touchstone. Yet despite this, it is relatively underused, with the current hardstanding and the build up of flotsam brought in by the tide limiting the type of activities that can take place within the open space.

The site's location and potential, however, present a real opportunity for the creation of a fantastic area of open space on the Isle of Dogs, for the benefit of residents and visitors. This potential has already been realised by members of the public through representations made via the Council's Local Infrastructure Fund (LIF) consultation, with residents expressing the desire to see the creation of a new park on the site. The Council subsequently awarded £25,000 to prepare an options appraisal for the site.

The Council's Regeneration Team, working in partnership with the Park's service, have subsequently appointed LDA Design to develop outline options for the site. We are in discussions with the freeholders of the site of those areas outside of Council ownership, including the East End Community Foundation, about the future of the site, and we're therefore seeking your views on what you'd like to see happen at the Slipway in order to ensure the options developed meet the needs of residents and visitors now and in the future by creating a more welcoming and useable riverfront space. This early engagement will assist LDA Design in developing options for the site; subsequent phases of the project we hope to advance with the agreement of the freeholders will look to refine these options, and will involve further engagement to ensure that residents and visitors can continue to shape the proposals.

How to get involved

We have prepared a short survey to gather your views on the future of Millwall Outer Dock Slipway to inform the Options Appraisal, that can be accessed here. We've also added an Ideas Board, which allows you to add virtual post-it notes of any quick ideas or thoughts you may have.
