What’s happening around Cavell Street?

Have your say on our proposals for the Cavell Street area, which aim to reduce and slow down through-traffic on residential streets and improve pedestrian access and safety.

Proposals have been developed for Cavell Street, Damien Street, Nelson Street and Varden Street to improve accessibility and traffic flow in the area and reduce conflicts between drivers on some roads, such as Nelson Street, where there are issues due to the bend and width of the road.

To encourage more active travel choices like walking and cycling, we are proposing to widen the pavements, install new crossing facilities and provide more planting to enhance the local environment.

These plans aim to improve safety and traffic flow, create more space and a nicer environment for walking and cycling and improve the look and feel of local streets by making the area quieter, greener and more pleasant.

We are asking residents and businesses in the area marked on the map below to give us their comments on the proposals by responding to our survey. Please submit your feedback by midnight on the 11 July 2021.

We want to hear your views on:

  • Proposed zebra crossing and other pedestrian improvements like pavement widening and resurfacing
  • Proposed planting and rain gardens
  • Proposed one-way streets on Nelson Street and Varden Street
  • Proposed changes to parking to accommodate more pavement space for pedestrians and space for rain gardens
  • Proposed speed table

Narrowing the road and widening the pavement would provide more space, safety and priority for walking and cycling in the long term, and help meet our current Streetspace objectives around social distancing in the short term.

New greenery and rain gardens would help with surface water drainage, create nicer public spaces and a more pleasant environment for the community.

The proposals would allow for full emergency vehicle access.
